Havaianas were first made in 1962 in Brazil and gained worldwide recognition in 1998. The sandal designs were based on the design of Zori, which is a Japanese style sandal. The Zori had fabric straps and rice straw soles, which is why to this day the Havaianas still maintain this unique textured rice feature on them.
